  {% endstepper %}

## Managing Requests

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Notification

The project owner will be notified of the access request in two ways:

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="in the project" %}

<div align="right"><figure><img src="https://docs.overleaf.com/~gitbook/image?url=https%3A%2F%2F3502988919-files.gitbook.io%2F%7E%2Ffiles%2Fv0%2Fb%2Fgitbook-x-prod.appspot.com%2Fo%2Fspaces%252FVetOkhFZmAC8QCQK0Pi7%252Fuploads%252FHW31kvb9RFtHb13Rhf9d%252FAccess%2520Request%2520Notification%2520-%2520dark.png%3Falt%3Dmedia%26token%3D7284162b-3587-48d8-912d-e4b4192faf0d&#x26;width=768&#x26;dpr=3&#x26;quality=100&#x26;sign=28fdbf63388fb7b7378c2cafdd1971fe&#x26;sv=3" alt="An orange notification badge within the Share button. It has a 1 in it, indicating one person has requested access." width="188"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

A notification badge will show within the **Share** button. It will display the number of open requests.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="by email" %}

<figure><img src="https://3502988919-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVetOkhFZmAC8QCQK0Pi7%2Fuploads%2FRgTFsvMwQzW3PCSQkJhE%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=bbc7c895-c443-42cc-b7f4-12ba7b25b4fc" alt="An email notification from Overleaf for an Access request. The requestor is requesting editor access for the project Science Textbook Example. There&#x27;s a button for Manage sharing that takes the Owner to the project in question." width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The email notification will point to the project in question. It will contain the requestor's name and email, the permission level requested, and a button to **Manage sharing** within the project.
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Update permissions

Click the **Share** button and use the **Manage access** menu to accept or decline the request.

<div align="center"><figure><img src="https://docs.overleaf.com/~gitbook/image?url=https%3A%2F%2F3502988919-files.gitbook.io%2F%7E%2Ffiles%2Fv0%2Fb%2Fgitbook-x-prod.appspot.com%2Fo%2Fspaces%252FVetOkhFZmAC8QCQK0Pi7%252Fuploads%252FLGYvp4FiPtC7h4VjP32w%252Fimage.png%3Falt%3Dmedia%26token%3D29622c99-aac9-41ad-bb8c-2f0a1d7fe954&#x26;width=768&#x26;dpr=3&#x26;quality=100&#x26;sign=6930dce80062afcd0666980b488c739c&#x26;sv=3" alt="The Manage access menu showing the Access requests. The Requestor has asked for Editor permissions which you can confirm by clicking Share, or hit Decline to keep their permissions the same. " width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Confirmation

The project owner will get confirmation of the updated access within the **Share** menu. The requestor will receive an email notification with the owner's decision.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.overleaf.com/collaborating/request-access.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
